Starting ketamine therapy can feel overwhelming enough without adding insurance questions to the mix. Whether you’re wondering if Spravato® is covered, what IV ketamine will cost out of pocket, or how to make sense of a confusing bill, Keta Medical Center’s Insurance and Billing Department is here to guide you through every step, so you can focus on treatment instead of paperwork.

Is ketamine therapy covered by insurance?

It depends on the treatment. Spravato (esketamine nasal spray) is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression, which means most commercial insurance plans and Medicare provide coverage for it. Keta Medical Center accepts most major insurers, including Aetna, United, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Cigna, among others.

After insurance is applied for Spravato treatment, most patients see per-visit costs fall to $0–$50.

IV ketamine infusions follow a different coverage path. Because IV ketamine is used off-label for depression and other mental health conditions, it is typically offered as a self-pay treatment. Patients may also request a superbill to submit to their insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

A fully supported treatment experience includes expert help navigating the insurance and financial details that can otherwise become barriers to care.

Beginning mental health treatment takes courage. For many patients, it may also require nearly all the energy they have.

Depression, anxiety, trauma, and chronic emotional exhaustion can make even routine tasks feel difficult. Adding insurance calls, authorization requirements, unfamiliar paperwork, and confusing billing documents can create another layer of stress at exactly the wrong time.

A fully supported treatment experience includes expert guidance through the insurance and financial details that can otherwise become barriers to care.

Patients should not have to manage the stress and complexity of insurance on their own.

Our dedicated Insurance and Billing Department is a large, experienced team that supports you at every stage of the process. We handle insurance benefits, authorizations, claims, ongoing follow up, and applicable savings, rebate, reimbursement, and financial assistance programs. We respond promptly, remain available when questions arise, and continue working behind the scenes throughout your care.

By taking responsibility for the administrative process, we help reduce the confusion, delays, and stress that can interfere with treatment. Patients should not have to become insurance experts while trying to get better. They should have a knowledgeable and responsive team working alongside them so they can focus their energy where it belongs: On treatment and recovery.

How Keta Medical Center verifies your coverage

Insurance questions often arise before treatment even starts. Is ketamine covered by insurance? What costs am I responsible for? Is Keta in-network with my insurance plan?

Our team begins answering and actively working on those questions as early as possible. We review each patient’s insurance benefits, confirm Keta’s network status under the plan, and coordinate prior authorization when needed.

Just as importantly, we explain what we find in clear, straightforward language.

Patients are not handed a list of insurance terms and left to interpret them alone. At Keta Medical Center, we have a dedicated and knowledgeable team available to answer questions, clarify what to expect, and address potential obstacles before they disrupt care.

Here’s how it works:

Send us your insurance card. A quick photo of the front and back is all we need to get started.

We verify your benefits and handle the paperwork. Our team checks your plan, manages prior authorization and confirms your Spravato eligibility for manufacturer savings programs, if applicable.

We text you within 24 hours with clear cost details. No confusing forms, no chasing approvals and no surprise bills.

Support programs can significantly lower treatment costs. We handle the process.

Insurance may be only one part of the financial support available. Eligible patients may also qualify for savings, rebates, reimbursement, or assistance programs that can reduce costs insurance does not fully cover.

For commercially insured Spravato patients, manufacturer support programs may help with both medication-related costs and eligible office or observation expenses. When combined with insurance benefits, this support can dramatically reduce the overall cost of treatment.

The impact can be substantial. Treatment that initially appears expensive can become genuinely affordable. For some patients, the remaining out-of-pocket cost may be minimal. For others, eligible costs may be reduced to nothing at all.

Patients do not have to navigate these programs themselves. Our team handles the entire process on their behalf, including identifying applicable programs, managing enrollment, submitting documentation, following up on claims, and tracking payments and available benefits throughout treatment.

There are no complicated rules for patients to decipher, no submissions for them to track, and no separate process for them to manage. We take care of everything from beginning to end.

Insurance support does not stop once treatment begins

Throughout the course of care, our team continues managing eligible insurance claims, monitoring how they are processed, reviewing payments, and following up when something does not look right. If a claim is delayed, denied, or processed unexpectedly, we investigate the issue and proactively take the appropriate next steps.

We also continue tracking applicable savings, rebate, reimbursement, and assistance programs alongside insurance activity, so patients do not have to manage separate systems or wonder whether available support has been applied correctly.

Patients have a consistent team watching the administrative side of their care, addressing issues as they arise, and explaining anything that requires their attention. This ongoing support helps reduce avoidable disruptions and allows patients to remain focused on treatment.

Confusing insurance documents? Send them to us.

Insurance documents can be difficult to understand and, at times, unnecessarily alarming.

Patients can send our Insurance and Billing Department any Explanation of Benefits, insurance letter, reimbursement check, or payment notice they receive.

Our team will review the document, determine what it relates to, explain it in plain language, and handle any necessary follow-up on the patient’s behalf. That may include contacting the insurance company, reviewing the related claim, reconciling a payment, correcting an issue, submitting additional information, or coordinating the next step.

Patients do not need to call the insurer first, interpret the paperwork, or figure out what to do next. They can send it to us, and we will take it from there.

What we ask of patients

Although our department manages the vast majority of the insurance process, patients remain important partners in it.

From time to time, we may ask patients to provide current insurance information, send a clear image of their insurance card, complete required authorization or program forms, notify us promptly if their insurance changes, forward any EOBs, checks, or insurer correspondence they receive, or confirm information that only they, as the policyholder, can provide.

We keep these requests clear, limited, and purposeful. Patients should not have to manage the entire process. Their role is to provide what only they can provide. Everything else is ours to handle.

The relief of not managing it alone

For many patients, one of the most unexpected parts of treatment at Keta Medical Center is the relief.

Not just the clinical relief that comes with care, but the administrative relief of knowing they will not be left to navigate insurance alone. No hours spent on hold with an insurance company. No confusion about whether a claim was submitted correctly. No anxiety about unexpected costs appearing without warning or explanation. No wondering what happens next.

What takes its place is clarity. A team that is actively managing the insurance and financial side of treatment, tracking what needs to be tracked, following up on what needs to be followed up, and stepping in before small issues become larger ones.

That kind of support changes the experience of treatment in ways that are hard to quantify but easy to feel. Patients arrive for their appointments carrying less. Less uncertainty, less dread, less of the administrative weight that so often surrounds medical care.

Patients have described that shift in their own words:

“I don’t really know what happens on the billing side, and honestly I don’t need to. I just know it gets handled. For someone who has spent years fighting with insurance companies over mental health coverage, that is not something I take for granted.”

– Patient, New Jersey

“At some point I realized I hadn’t thought about insurance in weeks. I didn’t have a bill I didn’t understand sitting on my counter, I hadn’t been on hold with anyone, and nothing had fallen through the cracks. That had genuinely never happened to me before with any kind of medical treatment.”

– Patient, New York

A team that understands the full patient experience

At Keta Medical Center, every team involved in patient care is trained to understand more than its individual role. Our clinical, administrative, insurance, and billing teams learn about the treatment process, the conditions our patients are managing, and the challenges that can come with seeking mental health care.

Team members participate in regular team briefs centered on patient care and review Keta Medical Center’s educational content, patient stories, and testimonials. This shared knowledge gives each department a deeper understanding of the full patient experience.

Have questions about insurance or billing?

Send any questions, insurance documents, or billing concerns to our Insurance and Billing Department. Our team will review the details, explain what they mean, and handle the necessary next steps on your behalf.

ketabilling@ketamc.com

FAQs

Does insurance cover Spravato (esketamine)?

Yes. Most commercial insurance plans and Medicare cover Spravato. Keta Medical Center handles approvals, benefit checks, and manufacturer savings program guidance on your behalf.

Why aren’t IV ketamine infusions covered by insurance?

Because IV ketamine is not FDA-approved for depression, insurers classify it as an off-label treatment and typically don’t provide standard coverage for it. However, Keta MC can provide patients with a detailed superbill containing all relevant treatment and billing codes. Patients may submit this directly to their insurance plan for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan, but our team ensures patients have the documentation they need to pursue any benefits that may be available to them for IV ketamine treatment.

How much does ketamine therapy cost with insurance?

Most insured patients pay $0–$50 per visit for Spravato. IV ketamine is a self-pay service priced at $500 per infusion, with financing available through CareCredit.

How long does it take to verify my insurance benefits?

Our team typically confirms your benefits and texts you clear cost details within 24 hours of receiving your insurance card.

What if I don’t have coverage for Spravato?

You may still qualify for manufacturer savings programs through Janssen, which can offer rebates or reduced fees depending on your plan. Our team can review your options during a consultation.

What happens if my insurance denies coverage for Spravato?

If a claim is denied, our team can help you understand why and explore next steps, which may include an appeal, a manufacturer savings program, or a self-pay arrangement. Every patient’s situation is reviewed individually.

Some Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapists administer oral lozenges or troches in their offices and then guide a traditional therapy session. The lowered dose helps soften psychological defenses—“psycholytic” literally means soul-loosening—making it easier to access and process difficult emotions, memories, and patterns within a familiar therapeutic framework.

Psychedelic Ketamine Therapy

A psychedelic ketamine session differs in both intensity and structure. At Keta Medical Center, ketamine is administered via IV infusion or Spravato (nasal spray)—both of which involve higher doses designed to induce a more introspective experience.

These sessions promote a dream-like altered state which may include vivid imagery, mystical experiences, and a deep inward “journey”. Eye masks and headphones to listen to the curated music playlists offered on our IPADs are utilized to enhance a more immersive journey.

During these ketamine treatments, doctors and nurses are always on-site and closely monitoring vitals throughout the process, but they do not interfere with or direct your internal experience. If the medical professionals interact at all—it is usually just to offer reassurance and safety rather than active dialogue.

Unlike psycholytic therapy, the primary therapeutic work occurs AFTER the ketamine treatment. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) usually takes place one to two days after the medicine, allowing time for reflection and the emergence of meaningful insights that may arise during journaling.

Patients can then meet with one of our in-house therapists, either virtually or in person, for integration sessions that help make sense of their experience, explore challenging material, and translate insights into lasting emotional relief.

The Importance of Journaling

Ketamine helps people access their inner worlds, so quiet time for introspection is highly recommended.

Journaling your thoughts—whether in a stream-of-consciousness flow or by responding to guided prompts—can be a powerful way to capture aspects of the ketamine journey. You may experience a wide range of emotions, from love and gratitude to repressed memories, fears, or sadness. Some people have a transcendent type of mystical experience with feelings of wonder and awe. Writing can help you reflect in a meaningful way and continue to make sense of material that is surfacing. Journaling also offers a cathartic release, especially when paired with talk therapy.

Utilizing KAP for Integration

While ketamine medicine sessions can provide immediate emotional relief, the deeper work begins during integration as more clarity emerges. We encourage all patients to work with a trained professional (whether that is an existing outside provider or one of our own in house therapists) in order to help work through sensitive issues and achieve new perspectives.

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) aides the healing process and may include:

Becoming More Self Aware

Processing Challenging Emotions

Releasing Negative Patterns

Identifying Self Limiting Beliefs

Replacing the Inner Critic with the Inner Coach

Reframing Old Narratives

Learning New Coping Strategies

Utilizing New Communication Skills

Shifting into Healthy Habits (sleep, meditation, exercise, nutrition)

Exploring Interests and Hobbies

Feeling More Confident

Embracing New Experiences of Joy

Allowing Happiness to Re-enter Your Life

Conclusion

Both psycholytic and psychedelic sessions can help people heal by forming new healthier thoughts and emotions. Each method supports trauma processing, emotional release and promotes greater self awareness—just at different levels of intensity. Understanding the similarities and differences of both approaches can help people feel more informed and empowered as they begin their ketamine treatment journey.

At Keta Medical Center, we utilize IV or Spravato to achieve desired outcomes of lasting emotional relief. Treatment plans are always individualized based on each patient’s history, needs, and goals. Our medical doctors and therapeutic teams work collaboratively to ensure your experience is safe, supported, and meaningful. Patients are encouraged to participate in KAP, ask questions, share feedback, and actively engage in the process to help ensure successful outcomes. With proper guidance and follow-through, ketamine therapy can be a powerful catalyst for positive change.

Ketamine and EMDR: A Powerful Path to Healing

If you’re exploring ketamine therapy, you’re likely seeking more than just symptom relief – you’re looking for meaningful, lasting change. Ketamine and Spravato (esketamine) can rapidly ease distress, reduce emotional reactivity, and offer mental clarity.

Ketamine also briefly boosts the brain’s ability to rewire and be open to change, a property scientists call “neuroplasticity.” So once that neuroplastic window of possibility opens, what helps you make the most of it?

As a therapist, I work with a psychotherapy technique called eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, or EMDR. EMDR is an evidence-based therapy designed to help clients heal from trauma. When paired with the neuroplastic effects of ketamine, EMDR becomes a powerful way to transform short-term breakthroughs into long-term healing.

What Is EMDR Therapy for Trauma and PTSD?

EMDR is a well-established psychotherapy tool that helps individuals process and resolve disturbing memories that have resulted in significant emotional distress.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR follows a structured eight-phase protocol. During these phases, clients are asked to recall distressing memories, emotions, and bodily sensations while engaging in what’s called bilateral stimulation. Through guided eye movements, tapping, audio tones or other methods, bilateral stimulation uses alternating, rhythmic sensory input to the left and right sides of the body or brain to promote emotional regulation and a sense of calm.

It’s a procedure that helps the brain reprocess the traumatic experience. Over time, the emotional charge associated with these memories begins to lessen, allowing for a more neutral and self-compassionate perspective. For an example of what an EMDR session might look like, check out this video , with EMDR psychologist and trauma specialist Dr. Alexa Altman.

Who Might Benefit from Ketamine-Assisted EMDR?

Ketamine-assisted EMDR may be especially helpful if you:

Have a history of trauma or complex PTSD

Feel “stuck” in traditional talk therapy

Have had some relief with ketamine but want more lasting results

Struggle with self-criticism, shame, or persistent negative beliefs

The Science Behind EMDR Therapy and Trauma Healing

EMDR is based on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, which suggests that traumatic experiences can disrupt the brain’s natural ability to process and store memories. Instead of being integrated into your broader life narrative, these memories can become “stuck” in the brain’s limbic system – the area responsible for emotional responses. When this happens, the memory remains emotionally charged, contributing to symptoms like PTSD, persistent depression, and a negative self-image. EMDR helps move these memories to the neocortex, where they can be processed with greater clarity and less emotional intensity.

The bilateral stimulation described above is a key part of EMDR, because it mimics the brain’s activity during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, the sleep phase that naturally processes memories. By reactivating these “stuck” memories in a controlled, supportive setting, the brain gets a chance to reprocess and heal.

Think of it like a paper cut that is being treated with antiseptic and a bandage. While your body has the innate ability to heal, it sometimes needs a little help. The brain is no different. It knows how to heal from emotional wounds. EMDR, especially in combination with ketamine therapy, simply provides the conditions to support and accelerate that natural healing process.

Why EMDR and Ketamine Therapy Work Better Together

In my practice, I’ve witnessed how ketamine can unlock emotional doors that once felt sealed shut. EMDR provides the guidance to walk through them safely and transform what’s on the other side. Healing doesn’t mean forgetting the past. It means changing how it lives within you.

I see it like this: Ketamine opens the door, while EMDR guides the path. Ketamine helps quiet mental defenses, allowing deeper emotions, memories, and insights to surface. EMDR then provides a structured framework to safely process and integrate those experiences, turning raw insight into meaningful, lasting change. Here are three specific ways how the two types of therapy complement each other:

Neuroplasticity meets reprocessing:

Ketamine enhances neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form new connections. EMDR takes advantage of this increased flexibility, guiding the brain to rewire old patterns and create healthier, more adaptive pathways. This combination supports deeper healing and longer-lasting symptom relief.

Accelerated long-term healing:

What might take months in traditional therapy can sometimes emerge in just a few sessions with ketamine-assisted EMDR. Because EMDR includes careful preparation and integration, the breakthroughs that arise are more likely to take root and lead to lasting transformation.

Gentler access to painful memories:

For many, trauma work feels totally overwhelming. Ketamine’s calming, perspective-shifting effects make it easier to approach difficult material without becoming emotionally flooded. This creates a safer, more supportive space for EMDR to do its work.

If you’re ready to explore ketamine-assisted EMDR for trauma, PTSD, or treatment-resistant depression, Keta Medical Center is here to help.

Schedule your free consultation today and take the first step toward lasting healing.

Not So Merry: Finding Relief from Seasonal Depression with Ketamine Therapy

Are you the kind of person who dreads winter? Who dreams of escaping those cold, dark, wet months of the year to some sunny island, or a tropical beach? Do the colder winter months make you feel depressed, hopeless, exhausted, and empty — but you’re fine in the summer? If you’ve suffered from major depressive episodes that coincide with fall and winter for at least two years, it may be more than just wintertime melancholy. You may be experiencing seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

What Is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?

When golden October fades into gray November and late afternoon starts feeling like nighttime, many people notice subtle changes in energy and mood. However, for those with SAD, these changes are profound, leading to deep despair and sometimes even thoughts of suicide.

SAD is a type of depression that follows a seasonal pattern, most often beginning in late fall or early winter and lifting with the arrival of spring and summer. It’s distinct from the “holiday blues,” which can be triggered by family or financial stressors and usually pass after the holidays. Unlike the temporary stress or sadness some people feel around the holidays, SAD is a clinically recognized, biologically driven depressive disorder. It follows a predictable seasonal pattern, returning year after year as daylight decreases.

Even milder forms, called “subsyndromal SAD” in psychiatry, can cause great distress and deserve attention. These are on the same spectrum as SAD and can progress to more serious depression if untreated. Seasonal depression affects about 5% of the U.S. population each year. That’s around 16.5 million people, and four out of five of them are women.

Do I Suffer From SAD?

We have heard our patients describe SAD as “being completely useless and miserable almost half the year, which is half of my life,” or “I understand the animals who go into hibernation. In winter, I don’t feel like a person. I am just empty and hopeless when it’s dark half the day.” To know if you suffer from SAD, watch out for some of the following symptoms which it shares with major depression:

Persistent low mood, guilt, or hopelessness

Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed

Fatigue and low energy

Changes in sleep and appetite

Difficulty concentrating

Many with SAD also experience oversleeping, carbohydrate cravings, weight gain, and social withdrawal. A licensed professional will be able to diagnose your condition.

Causes of Seasonal Affective Disorder and Winter Depression

While the exact cause of SAD isn’t fully understood, research strongly suggests that reduced sunlight plays a central role by disrupting circadian rhythms and brain chemicals that regulate mood. Less sunlight may:

Lower serotonin, the brain chemical that regulates mood

Increase melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep

Disrupt the body’s internal clock, making it harder to adjust to shorter days

Contribute to vitamin D deficiency, which is linked to mood regulation

Lack of daylight can literally throw the brain off balance by disrupting your brain chemicals and leave you sluggish, foggy, and low.

Traditional Treatments for SAD and Winter Depression

Several treatments are available for SAD:

Light therapy: Sitting near a light box (10,000 lux) for 30 minutes daily can help reset circadian rhythms and improve mood.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): A structured therapy program that helps patients challenge negative thoughts about winter and stay engaged in meaningful activities. Studies show that can be as effective as light therapy and more durable over time.

Antidepressants: Medications such as SSRIs and bupropion can help. Bupropion XL is FDA-approved to prevent SAD when taken ahead of winter.

Vitamin D supplements: May help in cases of deficiency, though results are mixed.

These treatments help many people, but not everyone finds relief. For people whose SAD does not improve with light therapy, psychotherapy, or antidepressants, newer options like ketamine therapy can offer relief.

Ketamine Therapy for Seasonal Affective Disorder and Treatment-Resistant Depression

At Keta Medical Center, we see the toll seasonal depression can take – not just during Christmas, but in the long, dark months that precede and follow the holidays. We offer ketamine therapy in the form of IV infusions or a nasal spray called Spravato. Ketamine therapy is a science-backed option for individuals who haven’t responded to traditional approaches.

Unlike antidepressants that take weeks to work, ketamine often provides relief within hours or days. By targeting glutamate, the brain’s most abundant neurotransmitter, ketamine helps restore communication between brain cells and supports the growth of new neural connections. This process, known as neuroplasticity, helps the brain heal from the effects of chronic stress and depression.

Patients often report improvements in energy, mood, and clarity of thought soon after treatment. For many, ketamine therapy has helped to break through seasonal cycles of despair.

Finding Your Inner Light This Season

If the winter feels heavy rather than peaceful or joyful, know that countless people quietly face the same struggles you do each season. Seasonal affective disorder affects millions each year, but effective treatments exist. You don’t have to wait for spring to feel better!

At Keta Medical Center, we provide safe, evidence-based, compassionate care based on each of our patient’s individual needs. Your treatment plan may
combine approaches such as CBT, lifestyle strategies, and ketamine therapy. We work closely with you and your therapist to create a path toward lasting relief.

Depression affects far more than just mood. It influences energy, motivation, sleep, daily routines – and the way you eat. One of the diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder is a marked increase or decrease in appetite nearly every day.

While some individuals with depression are completely lacking in appetite, others may find themselves turning to food for emotional comfort, often unconsciously. That’s a pattern known as emotional eating, and it can spiral into overeating, weight gain, and ultimately, worsening mental health.

Understanding and interrupting this cycle is critical for long-term recovery. For those stuck in a loop of depression and emotional eating, ketamine therapy may offer a new path forward.

Depression and the Drive to Eat

Emotional eating is not a lack of self-control, it’s a form of coping. In a state of depression, the brain’s reward system struggles to produce enough dopamine, the chemical linked to motivation and pleasure. High-fat, high-sugar foods provide a temporary dopamine boost, which is what causes the infamous bouts of craving. But the relief is short-lived. Over time, emotional eating can lead to nutritional imbalances, disrupted metabolic health, and significant weight gain. All of these further reduce energy, impair sleep, and make managing depression even more difficult.

A long-term study found that emotional eating is a key behavioral link between depression and weight gain. Over a seven-year period, adults who engaged in emotional eating – particularly those with short sleep duration – experienced greater increases in both body mass index and waist circumference. It’s a vicious circle: depression fuels emotional eating, and the physical consequences of overeating make depression harder to treat.

For Some, Traditional Treatments Fall Short

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), the most common antidepressants, can help reduce depressive symptoms. For those suffering from what’s known as treatment-resistant depression, these medications fall short. And for others, testing their way through a series of SSRIs can be an excruciating, month-long or even year-long process. Some antidepressants even have increased appetite and weight gain as side effects, which can exacerbate the problem.

This treatment gap has left many patients in need of a more effective solution, one that can rapidly improve mood while also supporting healthier behaviors.

Ketamine: A New Tool for Breaking the Cycle

Ketamine, originally developed as an anesthetic, has emerged as a powerful therapy for depression and other mental disorders. Unlike SSRIs, which target serotonin, ketamine works on the brain’s glutamate system, specifically by blocking NMDA receptors. This action leads to rapid improvements in mood and supports the growth of new neural connections, enhancing cognitive flexibility and emotional regulation.

Ketamine can be administered in several ways. They include intravenous (IV) infusion and a nasal spray called Spravato, a form of ketamine known as esketamine that’s FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression.

Critically, ketamine’s effects extend to the same brain regions involved in reward, impulse control, and executive function. These are the very systems that drive emotional eating behaviors. By helping patients regain motivation, reduce emotional numbness, and engage more actively in self-care, ketamine therapy may indirectly improve eating patterns and minimize reliance on food for emotional comfort.

In fact, early clinical reports suggest ketamine can reduce obsessive food-related thoughts and compulsive binge behaviors. A case study published in Brain Sciences described a woman with extreme bulimia who achieved complete and sustained remission after undergoing repeated ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. Her binge-purge episodes, which had reached 40 times per day, were eliminated entirely. The astonishing outcome is attributed to both ketamine’s neurobiological effects and the integration therapy that followed.

A Window for Change

The key strength of ketamine lies in its ability to open a “therapeutic window” – a period during which patients feel emotional relief and increased mental clarity. When combined with psychotherapy, this window can be used to identify triggers for emotional eating, reset unhelpful thought patterns, and build long-term coping strategies.

Early research suggests ketamine may reduce neuroinflammation, an important but often overlooked factor that contributes both to depression and to metabolic dysfunction. Inflammation has been shown to disrupt mood-regulating brain circuits while also interfering with insulin sensitivity, appetite signals, and energy metabolism. This shared biological pathway helps explain why depression and weight gain so often co-occur. By interrupting inflammatory processes, ketamine may help restore both emotional balance and metabolic regulation, supporting healthier eating patterns.

Moving Toward Healing

Ketamine therapy is not a magic bullet, but it can be a powerful catalyst. By reducing depressive symptoms quickly, it helps patients regain the energy, motivation, and calm needed to make lasting changes. In this way, ketamine therapy does much more than treat mood symptoms: It can help patients re-engage with life, including healthier eating habits, exercise, and a structured daily routine.

For those caught in the cycle of depression and emotional eating, ketamine is a treatment that can finally offer hope and healing.

For many, the holiday season is synonymous with joy and celebration. However, for a significant portion of the population, it can be an emotionally taxing time.

According to the American Psychological Association, 89% of U.S. adults report feeling overwhelmed by concerns such as financial strain, missing loved ones, or the stress of family conflicts during the holidays, and 43% of those polled feel that holiday-related stress interferes with their ability to enjoy the season.

Depression often spikes during the holidays because of social isolation or a sense of heightened responsibilities and burden. What’s more, the pervasive portrayal of perfect holiday celebrations in media and on social platforms sets unrealistic expectations, amplifying feelings of inadequacy or loneliness. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has found that 64% of individuals with a mental illness experience worsened symptoms during the holidays.

What causes depression during the holidays?

The holiday season is a time of joy for some, but for others – especially those already living with anxiety or depression – it can intensify emotional challenges. Stressors that may be manageable during other times of the year often feel amplified between November and January. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is one potential contributor. This form of depression is linked to reduced exposure to natural light during winter, which affects the brain’s chemistry, altering mood and sleep patterns. SAD is most common in northern climates, where shorter days and longer nights make the condition more pronounced.

But SAD isn’t the only factor at play. The holidays often bring added pressures that can weigh heavily on anyone.

Common triggers include:

Financial strain: The cost of gifts, travel, and hosting events can create financial stress that feels impossible to escape.

Social isolation: Loneliness can feel especially stark during the holidays when images of family gatherings and celebrations are everywhere. For those grieving the loss of a loved one, these feelings can be even more profound.

Anxiety about family gatherings: Tensions or unresolved conflicts within families often surface during holiday events, adding stress and emotional fatigue.

Unrealistic expectations: Media and social platforms often portray a picture-perfect holiday, creating pressure to meet impossible standards. This can leave people feeling like they’ve fallen short.

Substance abuse: Alcohol use frequently increases during the holidays, whether at celebrations or as a way to self-soothe. Unfortunately, excessive drinking can worsen symptoms of anxiety and depression in the long term.

Recognizing these triggers and understanding their impact are the first step to managing the season with greater ease and self-compassion.

Self-care is key for coping with holiday and post-holiday depression

Navigating the holidays with anxiety or depression can feel overwhelming, but there are steps you can take to protect your mental well-being and regain balance. Prioritizing self-care is key. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices can provide a buffer against the season’s stresses. Even small, consistent actions – like taking a walk or carving out quiet time – can improve your mood and energy.

It’s also vital to set realistic expectations. Let go of the pressure to create a perfect holiday and focus on what genuinely brings you joy, whether that’s spending time with loved ones, enjoying a cozy night in, or simply embracing moments of stillness. Remember, it’s about presence, not perfection. Feelings of isolation can deepen during the holidays, so make an effort to reach out for support. A conversation with a friend or family member can offer comfort, and volunteering is another way to connect with others while finding purpose. If you’re struggling with profound sadness or loneliness, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from a mental health professional – they can provide tools to help you deal with these emotions.

Finally, be mindful of how you use alcohol. While celebrations often involve drinking, excessive alcohol consumption can amplify depression and anxiety, leaving you feeling worse. By approaching the holidays with intention, you can create space for both healing and joy.

How ketamine therapy provides relief

For individuals with severe or treatment-resistant depression, ketamine therapy offers a safe and effective option, often providing rapid emotional relief. Unlike antidepressants that can take weeks to show results, ketamine works quickly by promoting the release of a neurotransmitter called glutamate, which improves mood and restores motivation and vitality. In addition, by fostering neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to “rewire,” ketamine can help patients break free from entrenched patterns of thought and emotion. This can make the New Year an ideal time to begin treatment, as ketamine therapy can boost the energy and clarity needed to set and achieve personal goals. Setting clear intentions before treatment can further unlock ketamine’s full therapeutic potential, helping patients focus on areas of growth, healing, and meaningful change.

At Keta Medical Center, ketamine therapy is tailored to meet each patient’s unique needs. Treatments are offered as either IV infusions or Spravato, a nasal spray. Both options are administered under the care of experienced medical professionals, ensuring safety and comfort throughout the process. Many patients report feeling a significant improvement in their symptoms within just hours to days of treatment.

Embrace the new year with renewed hope

If the holiday season leaves you feeling drained, know that you’re not alone and help is available. Keta Medical Center specializes in providing compassionate, effective care to those battling depression and anxiety. Together, we can work toward a brighter, more hopeful future.

Want to find out if ketamine therapy could work for you?

From Triggers to GLIMMERS: Rewiring Our Focus Toward Gratitude

If you're on a healing journey, you've likely become more familiar with your own triggers—those intense emotional signals pointing to something feeling wrong. Triggers can spark anxiety, fear, sadness or anger and in most cases these emotional or physiological responses are out of proportion to the actual circumstance. That’s because triggers are reactions to memories, situations or people connected to unresolved pain or trauma.

Instead of avoiding triggers, healing invites us to lean in, get curious, and explore what they are trying to reveal. Triggers may be uncomfortable but they can also be powerful teachers, especially when explored in Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy.

The goal isn’t just to react less—it’s to understand more.

Journaling helps get complicated feelings out of your head and onto the paper which inspires greater self-awareness. This leads to the ability to pause, stay grounded, and make more intentional choices. That’s the essence of healing: shifting from old reactive negative patterns into healthier coping strategies that build emotional resilience.

Make Space for JOY

Healing isn’t only about processing and transforming pain—it’s also about making space for joy.

You already know how to live with anxiety or depression. Now it’s time to exhale and allow happiness back in your life.

This is how glimmers can be an amazing tool. Glimmers are those subtle, uplifting moments that soothe your nervous system and restore a sense of safety and well-being.

Glimmers are the opposite of triggers. While triggers activate stress and send us into fight-or-flight mode, glimmers gently guide us back into a relaxed connected presence.

Glimmers remind us we can proactively ground ourselves and shift into feelings of comfort and happiness. And the best part, glimmers are always accessible if we just choose to notice them in our everyday surroundings:

Feeling the warmth of the sun

Noticing pretty flowers

Reading a book under a cozy blanket

Singing to your favorite song

Coloring or engaging in a creative project

Enjoying a sweet treat

Taking a walk in nature

Seeing the bright blue sky

Strolling an inspiring city street

Playing with a beloved pet

Laughing with a supportive friend

Ketamine and the Power of Positive Moments

Glimmers help regulate emotions by shifting us out of survival mode and into a calming sense of safety. During ketamine treatments, the brain becomes more receptive to change and the formation of new patterns, making it an ideal time to focus on positive moments that can amplify healing.

Ketamine rapidly reduces symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD but it also has a unique capacity to break negative thought loops, helping people get unstuck by promoting new neural pathways. This is known as neuroplasticity, and it’s one of ketamine’s key benefits. This means that intentionally noticing glimmers during this fertile period of treatment can strengthen new, healthier thoughts and emotions.

Focusing on the positive is especially important during emotionally charged times like the holidays. Whether it’s navigating difficult family dynamics or feeling the absence of meaningful connection, this season can bring up grief, longing, or loneliness—making it a particularly vulnerable time.

That’s why cultivating an awareness of glimmers can be so transformative. Whether it’s a song, a sunset, or a shared laugh, these types of light nourishing moments help bring balance and restore a grounded sense of calm.

Gratitude Is a Practice

Gratitude is more than a feeling; it’s a practice. Like any practice, it takes conscious effort. It begins with choosing where to place your attention and being intentional about your thoughts and the habits you're cultivating. With consistency, what starts as deliberate becomes natural.

By tuning into glimmers (those small, uplifting moments) you begin to rewire your brain toward safety, and calm. So be mindful about what you see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. These everyday sensations are opportunities to anchor into the present and connect with gratitude.

Practicing gratitude isn’t about denying pain or pretending everything is perfect. It’s about making space for the good alongside the challenges in order to cultivate a more hopeful and resilient mindset.

Try This:

For one day, don’t journal about what went wrong. Instead, look for what went right.

Name 3 glimmers you noticed today.

They don’t need to be profound—the smaller, the better.

Let your body feel them for a few extra seconds.

And literally smile and say “Thank you.”

Try to make it a daily habit to notice the good. This simple shift in focus—towards an attitude of gratitude—can guide you towards personal growth and lasting emotional relief.

Start collecting GLIMMERS

And let those glimmers remind you that peace and joy are always within reach—you just have to train your mind to see them.

Supporting Veterans’ Mental Health: Real Paths to Healing

For many veterans, the hardest part of service begins after coming home. Leaving the structure, purpose, and camaraderie of military life can be incredibly disorienting. It’s not just the change in daily routine. There’s a lot of emotional weight that can come with memories, trauma, and the attempt to adjust back into normal life.

Each day, an average of more than 17 veterans die by suicide. The most recent data from 2022 shows that 6,407 veterans lost their lives this way in that year alone. These numbers reflect deep, ongoing challenges with mental health that many veterans face quietly, often without feeling seen or understood.

At Keta Medical Center, we meet veterans who have carried their invisible wounds for years. Some have tried multiple therapies or medications without success. Others are hesitant to open up at all, or they just don’t know how. The good news is that new treatments are making a real difference, offering actual relief and more personalized options for healing.

Why Mental Health Support for Veterans Matters

Many veterans live with the long-term effects of trauma, often in the form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a trauma-related condition that can also lead to other mental health challenges like depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, from 2001 to 2022, suicide rates among veterans receiving care for PTSD decreased by over 30%, highlighting the importance of specialized treatment.

PTSD can show up in many ways: Nightmares, flashbacks, irritability, emotional numbness, or difficulty concentrating are just a few. It can disrupt relationships, daily functioning, and even the body’s ability to regulate basic responses like sleep and appetite. For some veterans, these symptoms appear months or even years after the original traumatic event itself.

The effects of PTSD are frequently misinterpreted or overlooked, delaying the care that’s needed most. While talk therapy and antidepressants are standard first-line treatments, studies show that only about 38% of PTSD patients find adequate relief through psychiatric medications, and up to 60% continue to experience symptoms even after treatment. These numbers make it clear that many veterans need more effective options, especially when symptoms are persistent or return after initial progress.

Ketamine Treatment: A New Path When Others Haven’t Worked

Ketamine is one of the most promising new options for treatment-resistant depression and PTSD. Administered either as an intravenous infusion for PTSD or as Spravato nasal spray for treatment-resistant depression, it offers fast-acting relief for people who haven’t responded to other forms of care.

A 2024 study from the University of Michigan followed 215 veterans who had tried multiple treatments without success. After six weeks of IV ketamine infusions, nearly half showed significant improvement in depression symptoms. About one-quarter had their depression severity cut in half, and 15% entered remission. Many of these veterans also had PTSD or anxiety, underscoring the therapy’s value for those with multiple mental health challenges.

Unlike standard antidepressants, which can take weeks to show effects, ketamine often begins working within hours or days. For veterans who have spent years waiting for something to help, that speed matters. At Keta Medical Center, treatments are always guided by experienced medical staff in a safe, supportive environment.

PRISM: Another Groundbreaking Option for PTSD

For veterans living with PTSD, whether they are experiencing anxiety, sleep disturbances, flashbacks, or emotional detachment, our new PRISM offers an innovative and noninvasive treatment option. PRISM is the first FDA-approved treatment of its kind for PTSD.

What makes PRISM different is that it doesn’t require medication or revisiting traumatic memories. Instead, patients learn to calm their stress response by seeing real-time neuro feedback from their own brain activity in a computer simulation. A headset is used to monitor brain activity (through EEG, or electroencephalography). Over 15 guided sessions, patients build new, healthier patterns of response. In a recent multi-site clinical study, 67% of participants reported a significant reduction in PTSD symptoms, and 32% reached full remission.

Many veterans find PRISM especially appealing because it is noninvasive, empowering, and medication-free. It’s ideal for those who haven’t gotten the relief they need from talk therapy or medications or who simply want to try something new.

At Keta Medical Center: Compassionate Care by Medical Professionals

Every veteran’s experience is different. Some carry visible scars and others carry invisible ones. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, PTSD, or just a sense that something isn’t right, you deserve to get the help you need to heal.

At Keta Medical Center, we combine the best of science with compassionate care.
The Complex Link Between Sleep and Depression — And How to Begin Healing at Keta Medical Center

Depression is more than just a low mood—it’s a deeply rooted illness that affects many areas of life, including sleep. For individuals struggling with depression, sleep disturbances can be both a symptom and a contributing factor, creating a vicious cycle that can be difficult to break.

Understanding the close connection between sleep and depression is the first step toward healing. For many patients—especially those with treatment-resistant depression—this insight helps illuminate why traditional treatments might fall short, and how alternatives like physician-led ketamine therapy can offer hope and relief

What Is Depression and How Does It Affect Sleep?

Depression is a mood disorder, not a temporary dip in emotions. It involves persistent sadness, a loss of interest in activities, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep and appetite and a range of other physical and emotional symptoms that disrupt everyday life. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, affecting over 20% of U.S. adults at some point in their lives.

The Bidirectional Relationship Between Sleep and Depression

Sleep and depression are closely connected—each one can influence and worsen the other. Sleep problems are a common symptom of depression, whether it’s insomnia or sleeping excessively. At the same time, chronic sleep deprivation can lead to depression by altering brain chemistry and reducing the brain’s ability to regulate emotions. Breaking this cycle is key to recovery.

How Depression Disrupts Sleep Patterns

People with depression often experience:

Insomnia: Difficulty falling or staying asleep

Hypersomnia: Excessive sleep that doesn’t result in feeling rested

Less REM sleep: Disruption to REM sleep can impair emotional regulation, memory, and focus

Why Sleep Disturbances Make Depression Worse

Lack of sleep can make depression worse by impairing your brain’s ability to process emotions, regulate mood, make decisions, and cope with stress. When sleep is disrupted, the brain can’t perform its overnight “reset,” leading to increased emotional instability, irritability, and fatigue during the day.

Tips to Improve Sleep When You’re Depressed

Improving sleep can be a powerful tool in managing depression—but we also understand that when you're feeling mentally and physically exhausted, even basic changes can feel overwhelming. Still, small steps can make a difference:

Keep a Consistent Sleep Schedule - Wake up and go to bed at the same time every day—yes, even on weekends.

Get Morning Light Exposure - Try to get 10–15 minutes of sunlight in the first two hours after waking up.

Use Your Bed Only for Sleep - Avoid working, scrolling, or watching TV in bed. Train your brain to associate your bed with sleep.

Establish a Wind-Down Routine - Gentle yoga, a warm shower, journaling, or light reading can help ease your mind before bed.

Limit Naps - Keep naps short (<20 minutes), and avoid napping after 2 p.m.

Watch What You Consume - Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine in the hours leading up to bedtime.

Dim the Lights - Bright lights suppress melatonin production. Begin dimming lights and avoiding screens an hour before bedtime.

When Lifestyle Changes Aren’t Enough: Ketamine Therapy for Treatment-Resistant Depression

If your sleep or mood still isn’t improving, it may be time for professional support. Talk therapy and medications can help, but some people don’t respond to these approaches.

At Keta Medical Center, we specialize in helping those with treatment-resistant depression. Our physician-led ketamine therapy offers an alternative—working on the brain’s glutamate system for faster, often more effective relief.

Ketamine Therapy: A New Approach for Sleep and Depression

You don’t have to choose between improving your sleep or lifting your depression. At Keta Medical Center, we address both. We work closely with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan—often combining ketamine therapy, talk therapy, psychiatry and wellness strategies to address both depression and sleep disturbances.

Whether your sleep issues are causing depression or your depression is robbing you of rest, you deserve relief. We’re here to help you get back on track—one restful night at a time.

You don’t have to keep struggling through restless nights and heavy days. Schedule a free consultation with Keta Medical Center today and take the first step toward restoring balance, better sleep, and lasting relief from depression.

Facing the Real Monsters: How Anxiety, Depression, and Trauma Haunt Our Daily Lives

At Halloween, we dress up as ghosts, zombies, and vampires, tell our kids stories of haunted houses, carve out and light pumpkins to symbolically scare away monsters. But for millions of people, the darkness is real and can’t be taken off with a costume.

Anxiety, depression or trauma are often hidden struggles that wear clever disguises. Sometimes, they announce themselves outright. But more often than not, they show up as stomacheaches, insomnia, snapping at a loved one, or feeling like your brain is wading through fog. They may look like productivity on the outside while on the inside, someone is falling apart.

Let’s pull back the mask, take a closer look at these invisible enemies, and see how compassionate, effective treatment can offer relief.

The Shape-Shifting Nature of Anxiety

Anxiety doesn’t always look like fear. It might look like perfectionism, manifesting in overthinking a single email for an hour. It might look like indecisiveness, saying yes, then no, then yes again, until it’s easiest just not to show up. Or it might mean lying awake replaying conversations from the day over and over again in your head.

Anxiety disorder is more common than you might think. Around 40 million people in the U.S. live with it. That’s nearly 20% of the adult population. However, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, only 36.9% receive treatment. And women are more than twice as likely as men to be affected by an anxiety order, as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states.

The symptoms go far beyond mental unrest. Chronic anxiety can be deeply debilitating, causing people to constantly question themselves, fret about every decision they make, or lie awake at night dreading the next day. The consequences can also be physical, whether digestive disorders, high blood pressure, asthma flare-ups, or a weakened immune system.

Depression: The Monster Behind the Smile

Depression is not just sadness. It is a serious and often treatment-resistant mental condition that distorts how someone thinks, feels, and interacts with the world. For the 21 million American adults who experience major depressive disorder each year, life can feel like a heavy veil they can't step out of.

It might appear as irritability or exhaustion. It’s someone who used to love baking suddenly leaving their kitchen untouched for weeks. Or someone who once thrived in social settings now retreating into a quiet, dark room for days or weeks on end.

Many people who suffer from depression don’t respond to traditional treatments. In fact, about 30% of people with depression are treatment-resistant, meaning they've tried multiple medications or therapies without success. And around 60% of people with depression never seek help at all, often due to stigma or shame.

The Unseen Phantom of Trauma

Trauma lingers long after the actual event is over. Like a phantom shadow, it can suddenly appear without warning. It can mean getting a panic attack from the revving noise of a motorcycle, being plagued by nightmares or difficult memories, or sudden, uncontrolled anger over insignificant things. Trauma is often misunderstood, yet it plays a significant role in anxiety, depression, and substance use. About half of adults with anxiety or depression report experiencing trauma in childhood, according to a 2021 study.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a common trauma-related condition, can make life feel like an unpredictable battlefield, even in safe places. Flashbacks, hyper-vigilance, avoidance behaviors are some of the symptoms that can disrupt relationships, physical health, and the sheer ability to function.

The Horror of Silence

The scariest thing about these “monsters” isn’t just their impact. It’s how good they are at hiding. Mental health struggles are often invisible and internal. People feel ashamed and carry them alone, worried about being judged, dismissed, or misunderstood. Many are not even able to acknowledge to themselves that they have a disorder, which is the first step to seeking help.

That silence is deadly. Depression is a major risk factor for suicide, contributing to over 40,000 deaths in the U.S. every year. Anxiety, untreated, contributes to heart disease and other life-threatening conditions. These aren’t just feelings. They are medical conditions, and they are treatable.

Unmasking the Pain: How Ketamine Offers Hope

At Keta Medical Center, we believe in facing these monsters head-on with compassionate, effective treatment. For patients who have not found relief with traditional therapies, ketamine therapy offers an alternative, science-backed approach.

Ketamine works differently from conventional antidepressants. It targets glutamate, a key neurotransmitter that helps build new neural connections. This process, called neuroplasticity, helps the brain rewire itself out of chronic cycles of pain, fear, and despair.

Ketamine can offer relief within hours to days, compared to the weeks or months traditional medications require. In clinical trials, up to 70% of patients with treatment-resistant depression responded to ketamine. For those struggling with suicidal ideation, relief can come in as little as 72 hours, according to a clinical study.

At Keta Medical Center, we offer both IV ketamine infusions and Spravato (a nasal spray form of ketamine), always under the care of licensed professionals in a supportive environment.

While the world celebrates with costume parties and carved pumpkins, many are quietly struggling behind smiles. If you're one of them and the "real monsters" of anxiety, depression, or trauma are following you day in and day out – you are not alone. And more importantly, you're not without options.

It's time to take off the mask.

Real healing begins when we stop pretending and start reaching out. We can help you face what haunts you and move together toward peace, light, and relief.
